13.2% REPORTED LASTING SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION AFTER SSRIS
A 2024 survey of about 10,000 LGBTQ+ youth in the U.S. and Canada found that among those who stopped antidepressants, around 13.2% reported persistent genital numbness—about 14 times the rate of those who stopped other psychiatric medications.
This study, led by Travis Salway, PhD, and therapist Yassie Pirani, provides one of the clearest large-scale looks at a problem many patients have described but few researchers have measured.
We explore how the survey was designed, why genital numbness is a crucial marker for PSSD, and what these results mean for young people prescribed antidepressants. The implications are serious: lasting sexual side effects may be far more common than previously assumed, raising urgent questions about informed consent and the need for safe alternatives.
